Mental blocks are a common issue that many people face, whether it’s when trying to focus on a new project, make a decision, or come up with new ideas. Despite our efforts to concentrate and brainstorm, our minds can feel clouded, and we can struggle to think clearly or from a different perspective.

What Causes Mental Blocks?

Let’s discuss the root cause of mental blocks and how to overcome them. Mental blocks are caused by limiting beliefs that we’ve developed since childhood. These beliefs can hold us back from achieving our goals and feeling content, leading to worry, procrastination, or frustration.

I’ve seen many people struggle with mental blocks, which they often describe as stumbling blocks, lack of creativity, or brain fog. However, they all stem from the same thing: limiting beliefs. We develop these beliefs at a young age and continue to build upon them as we experience negative life events. They then stay with us, impacting us daily until we decide to do something about them.

For example, as a child, if you were crossing the road and your parent shouted, “Stop! You’re so stupid, you could have been killed!” you might internalise the belief that you’re stupid in that moment and accept it as truth. This example may seem trivial, but it illustrates how we can internalise beliefs and carry them with us for the rest of our lives.

Some common limiting beliefs include “I’m not good enough to manage this project” or “I’m not a creative person,” which can cause us to subconsciously align with these beliefs and prevent us from reaching our full potential. It’s important to remember that everyone experiences mental blocks, including professionals who may seem to have everything figured out.

How Can I Overcome Mental Blocks?

I’ve worked with clients who run businesses or hold high-level positions and who struggle with these limiting beliefs despite their success. They may logically know what they’re doing but don’t feel like they do. They might feel like they’re not smart, good, or knowledgeable enough, which can be a significant barrier to their success.

These limiting beliefs are mental blocks, essentially subconscious decisions we’ve made about ourselves. Every time we attempt to do something, an emotion such as fear or frustration pops up before we can apply logic, and we get blocked. If we don’t recognise and push ourselves to take action, these blocks will continue to derail us.

The problem is that we become so used to our thoughts, actions, and beliefs that it’s challenging to recognise and catch them. We don’t realise that we can change these beliefs and that it’s possible to be on a different path in life within a short period. We can achieve more and feel much happier when we address these limiting beliefs.

Working with clients on my 121 coaching plan, I’ve seen individuals move from self-doubt and worry to nailing their goals and taking action. Overcoming mental blocks can be life-changing, and it’s possible to do so with the right support and resources.
